You Against Me by Jenny Downham

Title: You Against Me
Author: Jenny Downham
Pulbished by: David Fickling Books
Age Group: Young-adult
Hardcover: 416

Rating: 5- Amazing!! I want to read it again!

Goodreads summary:

If someone hurts your sister and you're any kind of man, you seek revenge, right? If your brother's been accused of a terrible crime and you're the main witness, then you banish all doubt and defend him. Isn't that what families do? When Mikey's sister claims a boy assaulted her at a party, his world of work and girls begins to fall apart. When Ellie's brother is charged with the crime, but says he didn't do it, her world of revision, exams and fitting in at a new school begins to unravel. When Mikey and Ellie meet, two worlds collide. Brave and unflinching, this is a novel of extraordinary skillfulness and almost unbearable tension. It's a book about loyalty and the choices that come with it. But above all it's a book about love - for one's family and for another.

Review:

I love love love this book! When I picked it up I didn’t actually think that I would like the book all that much but when I started reading it I fell in love with it.

The novel is so well written and so realistic, it captures every aspect of two completely different families who live in completely different lifestyles and has brought them to life perfectly and the impact that the sexual assault has put on both families and how the individuals in both families all deal with it in different ways.

Downham’s characters are so realistic and so easy relate to. I loved Mikey from the moment that I that I first read about him in chapter one and he was perfectly well rounded. Mikey shows how hard some children/teenagers actually have it having to deal with really doing everything and practically being the parent for a good portion of the novel. The same goes for Ellie she was perfectly well rounded and even though she went through a different type of struggle with family life it still shows that families aren’t perfect no matter how you want them to be and that they are really never what they seem on the outside.

As well as the love between two people it also shows the many different types of love that family and friends and the novel is perfectly written.
For me this has to be a must read that will stay with you long after you have read the words The End.

Matched by Ally Condie

Title: Matched
Author: Ally Condie
Pulbished by: Puffin
Age Group: Young-adult
Paperback: 366

Rating: 4- Great!

Goodreads summary:

Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s barely any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one . . . until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.

Matched is a story for right now and storytelling with the resonance of a classic.

Review:

As soon as this book hit stores I bought it, I was so looking forward to reading it, it just sounded brilliant. But when I first started reading it I think I might have set my bar a bit too high. The quarter of the novel wasn’t that gripping for me. I did like Cassia’s Matching Banquet but then it was less gripping after that then it picked back up a tiny bit when she was looking at her microchip, but I thought that Condie could have made it a bit more gripping when she was looking at it because of how on some summaries and the novel trailer that was meant to be a bit that changes things for Cassia, makes her think, makes her world turn upside down knowing that something has gone wrong in the society. But for me it just didn’t get there.

The characters: At first I was a little wary about Cassia’s character, but as I read on I saw her grow into a stronger character that was able to think for herself and not let the society and I grew to like her. Ky, I loved Ky’s character the most through he entire novel, I loved the mystery of him and his story I wanted to know what happened to him, I wanted to know his back-story and Condie did a brilliant good of giving piece of his story as the novel went on. The secondary characters were nice and rounded and she gives just enough detail about then, but I do wish that there was just a tiny bit more about Xander at times in the novel.

The plot was well thought out and I loved how even though she has put a very simple romance as in they barley even hug or hold hands let alone kiss it is still an intense and beautiful romance. I loved the ending it made my mind up about the book and made me realise that I really did want to read more about Cassia and Ky’s journey.

Please hurry up and realise the next book in the series!

Book Blogger Hop (8) & Follow Friday (7)

Book Blogger Hop

Time for Blogger Hop from Crazy for Books

I've only done Book blogger hop a couple and I like it! I love following other peoples book blogs and looking what they think about new and older releases. It's a great way to get out there and meet new people who share the same interests as you.

This weeks question: "What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?"

My answer:
That is a hard one! It has to be a tie for me because when I read a book the plot is what drives the story on and if there isn't a good plot it's doesn't make a very good story, but at the same time the character are the most important becuase without characters there is no story and like I said for plot if there isn't good charatcers it's doesn't make a good story.

Follow Friday is an opportunity to discover and follow other book related blogs! Want to join? Check it out at Parajunkee

This weeks question: Carmel is studying web design... What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

My answer:
I'm not in college nor do i work because i'm a comprehensive student (High School student). But for my optional subjects that I picked for GCSE exams I did pick, double science (so I could take the subject when it is optional to come back for further education when we leave school at 16), DnT woodwork, history, geography and drama.

Evermore by Alyson Noël

Title: Evermore (The Immortals #1)
Author: Alyson Noël
Pulbished by: St Martin’s Griffin
Age Group: Young-adult
Paperback: 356

Rating: 4- Great!

Goodreads summary:

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, sixteen-year-old Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s life story by touch. Going out of her way to shield herself from human contact to suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen Auguste…

Ever sees Damen and feels an instant recognition. He is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy, and he holds many secrets. Damen is able to make things appear and disappear, he always seems to know what she’s thinking—and he’s the only one who can silence the noise and the random energy in her head. She doesn’t know who he really is—or what he is. Damen equal parts light and darkness, and he belongs to an enchanted new world where no one ever dies.

Review:

I probably walked past this book about twenty times when ever I was in Asda shopping centre looking at the books while my mother was doing the shopping. I finally bought it when I had to pick two books from the store to have for my birthday off my grandparents. I didn’t know what to think of this book at first and I took me a while to actually get into it.

The Characterization: with Ever I did think that the character was well rounder and she was easy to relate to, but at times I did find her annoying in the way that she gets jealous of everything that involved Damen especially when it was to do with Darina. For all the secondary characters I wish there was more of a back story with them especially with Darina and Miles it would have been nice to have known a bit more about them.

I do have a compliant about the ending; there could have been more detail again with what happened with Darina but I’m not going to go into much detail about that. The ending just seemed a bit far fetch for my liking; I think that Alyson should have elaborated more on that part of the story.

The book was very entraining, the plot was good and I liked how the story unravelled bit by bit. The writing was excellent and when I did get into the book I just couldn’t put it down!
I can’t wait to read the next one in the series!

This weeks question: "What is the thing you like most about reading book blogs? Is it the reviews, author guest posts, articles, giveaways, or something else entirely?"

Do you have an under-noticed author that you think we should all know about?

My answer:
Joseph M. Rinaldo.
His books aren't YA and I wouldn't normally read them if I saw them in a bookstore (I probably wouldn't even be near the adult books shelf, really) but I am reading his book A spy at home, which he ask me to read himself and also sent me a copy... and to be honest i'm enjoying it so far I am enjoying it so far and in the way that he is putting things he knows like his daughters disability and into his characters son as well.

Forgive My Fins (Fins #1)
Tera Lynn Childs
Genre: young-adult, fantasy
Goodreads

Goodreads summary:

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

My Wishlist (#12)

Every Saturday i'm going to be adding one or more books that I have found and I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It's also an event that you can join in with too just comment me on what book you really want to see and then it could be on next weeks post!

This week we have some books that I found on Goodreads, Amazon and other places:

..........
I actually found this book about two minutes before posting this, but it just sounds so cool!

Moonshine
Alaya Dawn Johnson
Genre: paranormal, fantasy, historical fiction
Goodreads

Goodreads summary:

Imagining vampires at the heart of the social struggles of 1920s, Moonshine blends a tempestuous romance with dramatic historical fiction, populated by a lively mythology inhabiting the gritty New York City streets.

Zephyr Hollis is an underfed, overzealous social activist who teaches night school to the underprivileged of the Lower East Side. Strapped for cash, Zephyr agrees to help a student, the mysterious Amir, who proposes she use her charity worker cover to bring down a notorious vampire mob boss.

What he doesn’t tell her is why. Soon enough she’s tutoring a child criminal with an angelic voice, dodging vampires high on a new blood-based street drug, and trying to determine the real reason behind Amir’s request — not to mention attempting to resist (often unsuccessfully) his dark, inhuman charm.

..........
I just love the sound of this book it just sounds so fun to read!

Voices of Dragons
Carrie Vaughn
Genre: young adult, urban fantasy
Goodreads

Goodreads summary:

On one side of the border lies the modern world: the internet, homecoming dances, cell phones. On the other side dwell the ancient monsters who spark humanity's deepest fears: dragons.

Seventeen-year-old Kay Wyatt knows she's breaking the law by rock climbing near the border, but she'd rather have an adventure than follow the rules. When the dragon Artegal unexpectedly saves her life, the rules are abruptly shattered, and a secret friendship grows between them.

But suspicion and terror are the legacy of human and dragon inter actions, and the fragile truce that has maintained peace between the species is unraveling. As tensions mount and battles begin, Kay and Artegal are caught in the middle. Can their friendship change the course of a war?

In her young-adult debut, New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn presents a distinctly twenty-first-century tale of myths and machines, and an alliance that crosses a seemingly unbridgeable divide.

..........
Look at that cover it's just so beautiful and is it me or does it look a bit like the fallen by Lauren Kate's cover? But over than that it sound really good.

Sorry that it's up later today guys! I had to go out shopping for warm cloths because I'm going to Germany with my school (even though I didn't pick German when I was given my exam class options) and it meant to be freezing out there at the moment and the day I'm meant to be out there (Wednesday) it meant to be -9'C. Let's hope I don't freeze to death! :)

Marked (House of Night #1) by P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast

Title: Marked (House of Night #1)
Author: P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast
Published by: ATOM
Genre: young-adult, fantasy
Paperback: 348 pages

Rating: 4- Great!

Goodreads summary:

The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampires have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire - that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It's tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampire Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny - with a little help from her new vampire friends.

Review:

I’ve had the first five books of the series on my shelf for a while but never really got around to reading them, but I’m glad that I picked up the first book because I actually found it to be really good and fun read. With this one book I do admire Kristin Cast because even though I’m not sure if P.C. Cast uses some of the language in her other books but I would have never been able to write some (nearly any on second thought) of the swearing and the one very miner sexual part that was made somewhere near the beginning of the book and was used as a constant memory throughout the book with my mother. I would have been so embarrassed if that was me.

There was one main problem that I did find with the book. Yeah, It’s ok to have the occasional celebrity/real person reference but when you use it was like it was in the book it becomes too much, it’s not nice (even though it’s in a book) to have them (the characters) openly saying that they don’t like celebrities like Paris Hilton and Sarah Jessica Parker.

But the character were really entertaining and I did really like Zoey’s friends: the ‘twins’ Erin and Shaunee, Damien and Stevie Rae. Elliott freaked me out when I read one bit about him, plus it was dark, late and I was in bed reading so that might have had something to do with it. And last but not least out of my little character highlight Erik was so cute I loved the school hotty but with that thought who wouldn’t!

Even though this was a great book it was just really getting us to learn about the House of Night and some of the character within. I like the series so far but I am going to be waiting a bit until I move onto the next book in the series.

Plot 4/5
Characters 5/5
Cover 5/5
Ending 4/5

Exposed
Kimberly Marcus
Genre: Young-adult
Goodreads

Goodreads summary:

In the dim light of the darkroom, I'm alone, but not for long.
As white turns to gray, Kate is with me.
The background of the dance studio blurred, so the focus is all on her
legs extended in a perfect soaring split.
The straight line to my squiggle,
my forever-best friend.

Sixteen-year-old Liz Grayson is photogirl—sharp, focused and ready to take the world by storm with her camera. But Liz's entire life is called into question when her brother is accused of a crime—and the accuser is Liz's own best friend. As the aftershocks from that accusation rip through Liz's world, everything she thought she knew about photography, family, friendship and herself, shifts out of focus. And for the first time in her life, Liz finds herself unable to trust her own point of view. Told in stunning, searingly raw free verse, Exposed is Kimberly Marcus's gut-wrenching, riveting debut and will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins, Laurie Halse Anderson and Virginia Euwer Wolff.

I read the summary and fell in love. I can't wait to read this book!

Sleepless
Cyn Balog
Genre: Young-adult, fantasy, paranormal
Goodreads

Goodreads summary:

Eron DeMarchelle isn't supposed to feel this connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce his human charges to sleep. Though he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn't encouraged to do so. After all, becoming too involved in one human's life could prevent him from helping others get their needed rest.

But he can't deny that he feels something for Julia, a lonely girl with fiery red hair and sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. In the past, Eron has broken rules to protect Julia, but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can't reach her. Eron's time as a Sandman is coming to a close, and his replacement doesn't seem to care about his charges. Worse, Julia is facing dangers she doesn't recognize, and Eron, as he transitions back to being human, may be the only one who can save her. . . .

Even once they've become human again, Sandmen are forbidden to communicate with their charges. But Eron knows he won't be able to forget Julia. Will he risk everything for a chance to be with the girl he loves?

Cyn Balog's follow-up to Fairy Tale has more wit, more supernatural delights, and more star-crossed romance! Teen girls will love this story of a Sandman who falls in love with his human charge.
